The advantages of modular deployment of small diesel engines

The modular application of multiple smaller diesel engines in one installation offers major advantages regarding fuel consumption, emissions, maintenance costs and availability.

Partial load operation with the associated fuel inefficiency can be prevented by switching off an engine to ensure the remaining engine can run at a higher specific load. By virtue of the higher specific loading the emissions per generated kW are extremely low, and per maintenance interval the amount of effective kilo Watts generated increases significantly.

30th of June 2021 Gorinchem.

This week our collegaue Cor Kardienaal together with Theo de Paus, director of Visscher Scheepsreparatie B.V., signed a contract for the supply of a Masson MM W2800Y (formerly RSY 281). It concerns a special twin-input single-output reversing gear for the MBS Cotrans 1, a motor well barge used for the transport of wet sand.

Visscher Scheepsreparatie B.V. will handle the installation, which will take place towards the end of this year. The yard already installed other Masson MM W2800Y sets, also in combination with Volvo Penta engines.

Both Volvo Penta D13 Stage V engines deliver 294kW @ 1.800 rpm. By clever use of the twin-input single-output reversing gear, a combined propeller shaft power of 588 kW is available. The propulsion system can be operated in 3 modi, Mode 1 Port engine only, Mode 2 Starboard engine only, Mode 3 Port both engines.

The reversing gear will be fitted with a PTO to drive the hydraulic pump for the steering mechanism. This new PTO solution provides great advantages during installation, and  also makes the system more compact.

Also an ADS controls system, based on the very stable ZF CruiseCommand, will be supplied. This system will provide a smooth transition between the three drive modi, and protects the engines and the reversing gear during the many manoeuvring operations to come.

We thank the owner Dekker Group, Cotrans Scheepvaart B.V. and Visscher Scheepsreparatie B.V. for the trust placed in us.
