A Hybrid tanker, the best of both worlds

In close cooperation with Roald Verstraeten, the co-owner of mts Odyssee, ADS van Stigt developed a suitable PTO/PTI propulsion system for the Odyssee.

The mts Odyssee is employed in the so called estuary navigation, where suitably adapted inland navigation vessels are allowed on the North sea along the Belgian coast using the route between the Belgian ports of Oostende, Zeebrugge and the Westerschelde estuary.

The selected Masson W5200 reversing gear is fitted with a secondary PTO/PTI that is connected by means of a propeller shaft to an electric motor. This combination makes it possible to navigate with either the diesel or the electric motor, but it is also possible to use the combined power of both motors.

During diesel operation, the PTO can be used to drive the generator for the domestic circuit. When more power is required, the electric motor can be started fort the boost mode. Doing so it is possible to use a smaller main engine than otherwise required.

By using these technologies it was possible to create a durable and reliable propulsion system. The Masson gear and its monitoring equipment was supplied under full Bureau Vertias inspection and approval.
