ZF Azimuth thrusters suitable for shallow water operation

As ADS van Stigt we are the proud dealer of ZF, a brand that already for many years plays a leading role in maritime propulsion systems. In keeping with this tradition, ZF recently introduced an innovative Azimuth thruster that will broaden the operational envelope for many vessels thanks to the draught reduction it achieves.

An Azimuth thruster, also known as rudder-propellor, can rotate the direction of thrust over 360° in relation to the ships longitudinal axis, providing a previously unknow manoeuvrability. An azimuth thruster consists of a propeller, a nozzle, a below-waterline gearbox and with Z drive configurations also an above-waterline gearbox.

What makes the new thruster remarkable, is the advanced below-waterline gearbox. Due tot its design, the gearbox can be installed much higher inside the vessel. Doing so the draught of the vessel can be significantly reduced, which in particular for barges, multipurpose work vessels and tugs can be a great advantage. This technological breakthrough promises to improve the operational envelope for these vessels, but also increases the efficiency of the drive line resulting in a reduction of fuel consumption and the resulting emissions.
